We are often asked this question by new clients and it’s fair to say that Les Gets and Morzine are fairly low resorts. However, the Haute Savoie resorts positioned between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva have generally enjoyed far better conditions than resorts elsewhere sitting at similar altitudes.
There are other advantages too. The grass based pistes of Les Gets and Morzine offer great skiing with much less snow than higher resorts with rock based slopes. To quote the 2010 Where to Ski and Snowboard guide "“… grassy slopes don’t need much snow cover and in a sparse snow year you may do better here than in higher rockier resorts."
Lift closures due to high winds and miserable days in “white-out” conditions are also very rare on Les Gets' tree lined slopes. There have been many occasions over the last few years when operations in higher resorts have ground to a halt when Les Gets is still offering excellent snow and enjoyable skiing for guests of all abilities.
In January 2009 Ski Famille MD Chris enjoyed some great skiing in Les Gets then headed up to La Plagne for a couple of days to find slopes where over a metre of snow had been lost to wind blow. The wind was still blowing and the he quickly remembered to adopt the foetal position on high lifts to avoid extreme dermabrasion!
If the local slopes in Les Gets and Morzine do experience rare closures due to inadequate snow cover we can easily transport guests to Avoriaz where the skiing starts at 1800m and goes up to over 2400m. The journey by minibus takes just 20 minutes.
